The recent move of the Union government of India to cancel visas for Canadian citizens, a huge source market for India, has a chance to impact the peak tourism season in an adverse manner, with in-bound travel operators getting prepared for a huge scale of cancellations and are afraid of a spillover effect on the sentiment in general.
As per the statistics provided by the Ministry of Tourism, it shows that the month of December is the peak tourist season, as summer is lean. As per the data of 2021 provided by the ministry, more than 24 per cent of total tourists from Canada who in December had visited India, in May, contrarily, less than one per
cent travelled here.
The president of Indian Association of Tour Operators, Mr. Rajiv Mehra, said that for India, Canada is a huge source market and they have tourists, people of Indian origin coming to India to meet with their relatives and friends and this in 2023 was hoped to be a normal year after the slump of 2019-20. So, it has an enormous impact. In the wake of the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar and Justin Trudeau, the Canada PM’s remarks linking India to the murder, political relations between the two countries have taken a hit.
