The Executive Council of the UNWTO has officially extended the tenure of His Excellency Ahmed Al Khateeb, the Minister of Tourism of Saudi Arabia, as Chairman for the year 2024. This decision was made during the 25th session of the General Assembly of the UNWTO, held in the city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
His Excellency Ahmed bin Aqil Al-Khateeb expressed that the inaugural term of the Executive Council, under the Kingdom’s leadership in 2023, was distinguished by initiatives that amalgamated partnership, innovation, and progress. These accomplishments were the direct result of a shared vision, cooperative efforts, and unwavering commitment among all Member States. He said, “We will work diligently to achieve our targets to ensure that the tourism sector continues to foster economic exchange, cultural convergence, and humanitarian connections among countries worldwide.”
Minister Ahmed Al-Khateeb also highlighted the unwavering support that the tourism sector receives from the Kingdom’s leadership, underscoring that this support extends far beyond the national borders. It contains important global efforts that support sustainable development, such as the Sustainable Tourism Global Center, which was launched by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in October 2021 at the Saudi Green Initiative. This center will offer best practices to satisfy the needs of the whole sector, including micro, small, and medium-sized businesses, which make up 80% of the industry,
and global firms with distinct objectives and experiences. The center has announced the opening of a worldwide research center.
Minister Ahmed Al-Khateeb emphasized that Saudi Arabia’s prominent position in the tourism sector in 2023 serves as a testament to the Kingdom’s vision and dedication to shaping the future of global travel. The Kingdom will host the UNWTO 26th General Assembly in 2025, demonstrating its visionary and innovative position in the world of tourism.
A pivotal aspect of KSA’s leadership was the establishment of the Task Force on Redesigning Tourism for the Future, a collaborative initiative between Saudi Arabia and Spain. This endeavor aims to empower the UNWTO to better address the ever-changing tourism sector, emphasizing its vital role in promoting sustainable and responsible tourism worldwide.
