Gustavo Segura Sancho takes office as Costa Rica’s Tourism Minister

Recognised economist and business administrator Gustavo Segura Sancho recently took office after being appointed as the new Minister of Tourism for Costa Rica. Mr. Segura comes with 23 years of experience in the tourism and hospitality industry and previously served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Islita Group.


Minister Segura holds a degree in economics from the University of Costa Rica as well as a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the INCAE Business School, with a specialization in sustainable development. He has also served as the Manager of the Hotel Asset Management Division of Cuestamoras, owners of the Marriott Los Suenos, Costa Rica Marriott Hacienda Belen, Andaz Peninsula de Papagayo and Hyatt Andaz Pinares.


He is also a member of the INCAE Business School in the field of sustainable tourism, and has managed operations and consultancy services for organisations in the travel and tourism sector in several Latin American countries. In his latest position, Minister Segura will have three major objectives in mind and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has generated the worst crisis in the history of the country and the tourism sector.


His objectives would be to achieve a gradual and safe reopening of international flights, to generate useful tools in the short term to alleviate the financial problems of the companies in the sector, and to promote economic recovery measures while taking into account the importance of health management. He has already insisted that coordination with the health authorities is crucial and short-term pressure should not distract from the attention to medium and long-term issues, such as maintaining the country as a leader and competitive player in international tourism.


The latest appointment comes following the resignation of former previous Minister of Tourism Maria Amalia Revelo Raventos due to reasons related to health. The Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) its Board of Directors, General Manager and officials have wished Ms. Maria Amalia Revelo a quick and satisfactory recovery and thanked her for the contribution to the Institution and the country, with more than 40 years of tourism industry experience.


Gustavo Segura Sancho also served as a member of the ICT Board of Directors between 2010 and 2016 and said in a statement that is aware of the emotional, physical and financial crisis of the stakeholders in the tourism industry. He mentioned that his goal is to strive to overcome the impacts that the industry is suffering as a result of the pandemic with the aim of moving forward. He shared that a better future would require a joint effort and a shared country vision.
