Before COVID and the close down of the borders of New Zealand, international tourism was the biggest largest source of foreign exchange for New Zealand. Overseas tourism accounted for roughly 5.5% of the GDP.
Tourists are now coming back but in July 2023, international visitors were still 16% lower than July 2019.
