On Thursday, rescue teams were trying to free almost 50 people trapped beneath rubble after a landslip in western India killed at least five people.

Heavy rain sparked the landslip in Raigad, Maharashtra, at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, damaging at least 40 residences in the mountainous district, according to Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

He stated that emergency personnel were dispatched to Irshalwadi hamlet in the Khalapur region to rescue those trapped and that 75 people were evacuated. However, the relief effort was delayed by additional heavy rain.

For the previous two days, the area has seen significant rain.

“According to early information, 48 families have arrived. So far, 75 people have been evacuated, and five have perished. “Arrangements have been made for the injured to be treated immediately,” Mr Fadnavis said in a tweet.

“The state government will provide all possible assistance to the heirs of the deceased, and the state government will bear the entire cost of treatment for the injured.” We are continually keeping an eye on the situation and the rescue efforts.”

Home Minister Amit Shah stated that four National Disaster Response Force teams had been dispatched to the scene to conduct rescue efforts. “Our priority is to evacuate people from there and give immediate treatment to the injured,” he said.

Torrential rain has fallen in at least ten districts throughout the state. On Thursday, the India Meteorological Department issued a warning for “heavy to very heavy” rains in various regions.

In Mumbai, India’s largest metropolis, schools were closed due to rain warnings.

According to the IMD, at least eight additional regions will continue to experience heavy rain, thunderstorms, and high gusts into the weekend.
