Shell Aviation and Emirates: Joining Forces to Pioneer SAF Supplies at Dubai Hub

Emirates and Shell Aviation announced that they had signed a huge agreement. The supply of more than 300,000 gallons of blended SAF for use at Emirates’ international hub in Dubai (DXB) was the subject of a huge announcement by the airline. The pact is the most recent development in Emirates’ environmental strategy, which is built around three key pillars: responsible consumption, emissions reduction, and the preservation of wildlife and habitats. Before the end of the year, the first SAF supply under the agreement is anticipated to start, marking the first time SAF will be supplied through the DXB airport fueling infrastructure.

Avelia, one of the first blockchain-powered SAF solutions in the world, will be used by Emirates to track SAF delivery and its use data. Shell Aviation and Accenture power Avelia, which also receives assistance from Energy Web and American Express Global Business Travel. Emirates will purchase the physical SAF and associated environmental attributes through Avelia to help reduce its Scope 1-related emissions, and Shell Corporate Travel will purchase the Scope 3 environmental attributes associated with the same physical SAF to reduce its related business travel.

In 2017, a Boeing 777 operating out of Chicago was used for the airline’s inaugural flight using SAF blended with jet fuel. The airline now flies flights from Paris, Lyon, and Oslo with blended SAF and has also elevated SAF for flights from Stockholm. Emirates successfully performed the first demonstration flight in the area powered entirely by SAF earlier this year.

Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline said that they were proud to work in partnership with Shell to make a SAF supply available for Emirates in Dubai for the first time. He further mentions that the Avelia platform will be very useful as it will provide business travellers the flexibility to align their sustainability targets and reduce their environmental footprint when traveling.

Tim says, “Aviation plays a vital role in Dubai and the wider UAE economy, and we look forward to continuing collaborating with like-minded organizations and government entities to look at viable solutions that introduce more SAF, a fuel that is currently extremely limited in supply, into the aviation fuel supply chain and support Emirates’ efforts to reduce emissions across our operations.”

Chu Yong-Yi, Vice President of Shell Corporate Travel mentions that it is wonderful to build on this to jointly work on decarbonization as Emirates and Shell have a long-standing commercial relationship. He further says, “Enabling SAF to be supplied at DXB for the first time is an important milestone and a perfect example of how the different parts of the aviation value chain have a role to play in unlocking progress on SAF. We hope that this can act as a springboard for more action on SAF across the aviation industry in the UAE and region, delivering another step forward for our net zero emissions journey.”

SAF is a safe, fully-certified drop-in fuel that may be used in place of conventional jet fuel at a ratio of up to 50% to provide aviation fuel with much lower lifecycle carbon emissions. In its neat form, SAF can reduce lifecycle emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.
