Firefly Launches Maiden Flight from Penang to Bangkok

Firefly, a subsidiary of Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), celebrated the launch of its first flight from Penang International Airport (PEN) to Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) in Bangkok, flight FY3632, departing at 4:00 pm.

Ooi Chok Yan, Chief Executive Officer of Penang Global Tourism, Dersenish Aresandiran, Chief Commercial Officer of Airlines (MAG), Captain Hamdan Che Ismail, Chief Operating Officer of Firefly, and senior representatives from MAG and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) attended a send-off and welcoming ceremony at PEN.

To mark the significant event, passengers departing for DMK received special treats at the gate. The flight arrived in Bangkok at 3:50 PM local time. The return journey, flight FY3633, landed safely back in PEN at 8:50 PM, and passengers were welcomed with a water salute and a special kompang performance upon arrival.

Ahmad Luqman Mohd Azmi, Chief Executive Officer of Airlines from MAG, said that this strategic expansion highlights Firefly’s dedication to enhancing its presence across the ASEAN region. He adds, “The establishment of a direct connection to PEN exemplifies our dedication to driving growth in the northern hub. This development not only improves regional accessibility for domestic travellers but also open doors for international visitors, potentially boosting tourism, business travel and foreign investment.”

YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy, said, “Welcome to Penang! I’m thrilled to announce the new Firefly Airlines’ direct flight from Bangkok to our beautiful island. As the EXCO for Tourism and creative economy in Penang, I’m excited to share the rich culture, heritage, and natural beauty that Penang has to offer.”

This new route will run five times a week on the airline’s modified Boeing 737-800s, which have 189 Economy Class seats with legroom and ergonomic seats as well as USB type A and C power outlets so passengers can charge their devices while relaxing in their seats.
